For this charity art auction project benefiting downtown Goliad, I donated my skills to modify, paint and upholster a rocking chair to look like the National Historic Landmark Presidio de la Bahia. Goliad is a town close to my hometown, and it was an honor to join and help raise funds for their downtown.
Using my creativity and craftsmanship, I added a cushioned seat upholstered in vibrant Serape fabric for a pop of color. I also added curved handles to the arms, providing a comfortable and stylish place to rest one's arms.
To pay homage to the Presidio de la Bahia, I hand-carved the wooden Our Lady of Loreto statue, which stands in the niche above the chapel entrance. In addition, I added curved pieces to the lower rockers, further accentuating the mission style of the music.
To complete the transformation, I painted the entire rocker in a sleek matte black and then used acrylic art paints on top to create a beautiful, unique design. I even filled in the open slat area on the back to create an entire "canvas area" for the artwork while still retaining the rustic feel of the chair. The result was a stunning and functional piece of art that sold for $2,000 at auction. The chair, affectionately dubbed "La Bahia," is a testament to Goliad's rich history and culture and surrounding areas.
