Surface Design and Illustrations
As the Senior Surface Designer/Illustrator at KidKraft®, I created original surface pattern design and illustrations for the Dora the Explorer™ Dollhouse, including furniture and fabric colors. Most character assets were provided by Nickelodeon®. Since Nickelodeon® did not have a complete library of Dora’s house, I created pieces such as the fireplace, bathroom sink & vanity, kitchen counters, and cabinets, the desk, multiple rugs, exterior textures, floor textures, and finishes, tile patterns, hacienda styling of the window frames to fit the cut outs, and furniture art for silkscreen as well as paper or heat transfer applications.
Collaboration and Concepts
Working together with the team at KidKraft® and Nickelodeon®, we brainstormed concepts, created mock-ups, and finalized production. We used Adobe Illustrator to create vector artwork and multi-program painting in Adobe Photoshop to capture the Dora the Explorer aesthetic.
Production Process
In addition to creating the artwork, I also designed the packaging layout following the style guide provided by Nickelodeon®. We used CMYK and silkscreen printing for production and created mock-ups to ensure accuracy and make necessary adjustments before showcasing the product to the public.
Team Members
All artwork and design for the Dora, the Explorer™ Dollhouse, is © KidKraft®, Inc. and Nickelodeon®. The industrial designer for the project was Emily Dixon, and the plastics/sculptor was Stephen Bates.
